Principal Investigator (PI) and Project Manager
Maria Rita Palattella (S’04, M’07, PhD’11) is a Senior R&T Associate at LIST, in the ERIN department. She is leading the work on the design of innovative communication systems and network architectures for different IoT applications, and investigating the integration of IoT with satellite in 5G.
Prior to that, she has been a Research Associate at SnT, at the University of Luxembourg. She contributed to the design of MAC protocols and energy-efficient scheduling algorithms for Wireless Sensor Networks. She was involved in several EU FP7 and H2020 projects, including OUTSMART, IoT6, F-Interop which focused on: the development of smart IoT applications, online testing tools for IoT technologies, interoperable IoT platforms, and the exploitation of the potential of IPv6 and related standards (IEEE802.15.4e, IETF RPL, etc.).
PhD candidate
Mohammad AFHAMISIS (S’13, M’17, PhD'24) is a PhD candidate at LIST, in the ERIN department working on optimizing LoRaWAN protocol for integration with Satellite for smart agriculture applications. He studied his Bachelor in telecommunication engineering in the Semnan University of IRAN, which is top 10 in Electrical engineering universities in IRAN. Then he continued his study and research on Satellite Technology engineering in Master of Science in the Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), which is the best university in the middle east for satellite engineering. His thesis was on optimizing the control of GEO satellites with large antennas and deployable solar cells. Also, He has 6 years of experience in working as a Senior radio communications specialist in the Iranian railways headquarter office and managed different radio communications and IoT monitoring projects.
Senior Engineer
Sebastian Barillaro (Eng. 2009) is a Senior Engineer at LIST, in the ERIN department, working on the deployment of LoRa/LoRaWAN networks, with satellite backhauling, for smart agriculture applications. Prior to that, he was a researcher at the Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Industrial (INTI), the National Metrology Authority in Argentina in the Electronics and ICT Department. He was the leader of the R&D of Wireless Networks applied to Internet of Things (IoT). He introduced and deployed LPWAN Sensor Network at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the USA. Previously, he was a Professor at the Universidad Nacional de La Matanza (UNLaM), in Argentina. He also worked as ICT Cyber Security Analyst, System Administrator, Software Developer among several private companies.
